While Hong Kong's subtropical climate does not offier the extremes endured by regions to the north and south, there is definite seasonal variation that should be taken into account.

 

- Spring (March to April)

Temperature: 18C (67F) to 27C(80F); Humidity: around 82%; Conditions: Occasional mist and rain showers; What to wear: Have sweaters and showerproof jackets ready.

 

- Summer (May to September)

Temperature: 26C (79F) to 35C(95F); Humidity: around 80%; Conditions: Mostly sunny, but during the typhoon season there can be heavy rain.; What to wear: Short sleeves for outdoor wear on sunny days. Light weight sweater for indoors as restaurants tend to turn up the air-conditioning.

 

- Autumn (October)

Temperature: 18C (64F) to 28C(82F); Humidity: around 72%; Conditions: Sunny and clear, ideal walking weather.; What to wear: Light clothing for the day, sweaters and light jackets for the evenings.

 

- Winter (November to February)

Temperature: 7C (45F) to 20C(68F); Humidity: around 72%; Conditions: Sunny, bright and coolish.; What to wear: Have woollens and overcoats ready.

The Hong Kong Government has a very effective system whereby information and instructions on tropical storms and activity is disseminated. With the help of local news media and the Hong Kong Government's website, the Government reports the location of the storm, its direction and wind velocity. Here are the important signal levels:

Stand By: A tropical cyclone, centered within 80 km (500 miles) of Hong Kong, may pass and cause strong winds, gale, storm or typhoon force conditions.

Strong Wind: Winds up to 38 M.P.H. velocity have been reported or are expected soon.

Gale or Strom: Winds between 39 and 73 M.P.H. velocity have been reported or are expected soon.

Gale or storm force winds are increasing or expected to increase significantly in strength.

Hurricane force winds are expected or blowing. Sustained wind speeds are reaching upwards from 118 km/h. Gusts ay exceed 220 km/h.
