Rail passengers arriving at Hong Kong from the Mainland of China can enjoy discounts of up to HK$5 on MTR fares by swiping their Octopus cards over either one of the two new Fare Saver machines located near two immigration check points.
The new Fare Saver machines are installed in the paid area of Shenzhen Metro’s Futian Kou’an Station and inside the restricted area of the Hung Hom Station Intercity Through Train Arrival Hall. Cross boundary passengers who swipe their Octopus cards over the Fare Savers may enjoy a fare discount on the next MTR trip they take on the same day from MTR Lok Ma Chau or Hung Hom stations to any MTR destination (except the Airport Express).
Details of the cross-boundary discounts are as follows:
|Locations of Fare Saver machines||Discount on MTR fares||Promotion Period|
|Concourse paid area of Shenzhen Metro Futian Kou’an Station||$3 MTR fare discount when interchanging to East Rail Line at MTR Lok Ma Chau Station||1 July – 31 December 2009|
|Restricted area of the Hung Hom Station Intercity Through Train Arrival Hall||Up to $5 MTR fare discount when interchanging from through train to the MTR at Hung Hom Station||18 July– 17 October 2009|
The Fare Saver located in Shenzhen is the first to be launched outside of Hong Kong.
Other than enjoying discounted fares, from 1 July to 20 September 2009, cross-boundary passengers who shop at Lok Ma Chau Duty Free will receive one Adult Cross-boundary Single Journey Ticket Voucher for each transaction above HK$400. The voucher can be redeemed at the Duty Free Shop in the Arrival Hall of Lok Ma Chau Station on or before 30 September 2009, while stocks last. The ticket is valid for one month from the day of redemption.
Passengers departing from Hong Kong can also enjoy special Weekend Through Train Travel Packages. The MTR Corporation has teamed up with select travel agents to offer a round-trip adult ticket from Hung Hom Station to Guangzhou East Station for only HK$230, a 40% discount off the regular fare (round-trip child ticket will be sold for HK$146). To enjoy the promotion, passengers must depart from Hong Kong and purchase a hotel stay or admission to a designated tourist attraction in Guangzhou or neighbouring areas. A limited number of packages will be available on a first-come, first-served basis until 31 October 2009. Details are available from the travel agents in the list attached.
