Television Broadcasts Limited Commences Trial Broadcast of “iNews” Digital Channel

Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) announced the commencement of the trial broadcast of the iNews digital channel (previously named Interactive Information channel), Logical Channel Number 83, providing 24-hour news, public affairs, sports, finance and interactive information services.

Mr S K Cheong, General Manager – Broadcasting, TVB expressed that “One of the special features of the trial broadcast is the News Bar which provides brand new interactive services including weather forecast, stock price enquiry and the ten most active stocks by turnover. Viewers can now conveniently obtain timely and important information at the touch of a button. The clicking of the yellow button of their remote control will activate the News Bar. They can then enter the appropriate number to obtain the desired information. For example, by clicking number 1, the upcoming three days’ weather forecast will be shown; number 2, the Hong Kong stock price enquiry page (not including warrants); and number 3, the ten most active stocks by turnover. For the stock enquiry page, viewers can enter the relevant stock code and its price will be displayed (around 15 minute delay with constant update). These services are unique and not available on traditional analogue television. TVB is proud to be the first to introduce interactive data television services on free TV in Hong Kong. These value-added services will definitely be a driving force for Digital Terrestrial Television adoption.” iNews channel will be officially launched at the beginning of 2009.

In addition to the News Bar providing finance interactive services, the TVBar has already been launched in July 2008 on HD Jade and J2. At the touch of a red button, the TVBar will list out information on Weather, Hang Seng Index, News Headlines and names of programmes being aired in various channels. TVB will roll out other interactive TV services in various phases. These services, including enhanced information to support relevant TV programmes such as food and travel programmes, programme synopsis/ EPG (Electronic Programme Guide) and shopping information, will follow soon.

To enjoy all these benefits, consumers must choose higher tier set-top boxes that bear the TVB interactive logo.
