Special Stamp Issue - Stonecutters Bridge

Hongkong Post November 30 announced that a set of stamps based on the theme of "Stonecutters Bridge" will be released for sale together with associated philatelic products on December 17.

Stonecutters Bridge straddles the Rambler Channel at its entrance to the Kwai Chung Container Port. Approaching from Stonecutters Island on the east and Tsing Yi Island on the west near Container Terminals 8 and 9 respectively, it forms a key element of Route 8 between Tsing Yi and Cheung Sha Wan. Hongkong Post is pleased to issue a set of special stamps to mark the completion of this major infrastructure project.

Government launches "Budding Winter"

The Home Affairs Bureau and four universities in Hong Kong, November 24 launched a new large-scale arts programme - "Budding Winter" to nurture budding artists and bring arts to the community.

Officiating at the opening ceremony, the Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, said: "Our young people are the next generation of talented artists and audiences and we are making them the centre stage in 'Budding Winter'. We have engaged more than 180 artists in this project with a total of 90 art displays in Hong Kong Park, Kowloon Park, Sha Tin Park and Tuen Mun Park."

Films and exhibition at HK Film Archive on beginnings of Sammo Hung, Jackie Chan and Yuen Clan

Sammo Hung, Jackie Chan, Yuen Kwai, Yuen Biao, Yuen Wah and Yuen Chau are household names today and superstars who changed the course of Hong Kong cinema. Yet there was a time when they were merely bit players in movies, serving as stuntmen or even extras, often faceless or nameless. They were once the members of the "Qi Xiao Fu" (Seven Little Fortunes), who underwent harsh and stern training from opera veteran Yu Zhanyuan at the master's Hong Kong-China Opera Institute.

Hong Kong receives donation of paintings from Wu Guanzhong

Internationally acclaimed master of painting Wu Guanzhong had  offered Hong Kong another generous donation of 33 paintings, the Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, announced November 13, adding that the donation would become a significant permanent collection of the Hong Kong Museum of Art.

To provide an opportunity for the community to appreciate Wu's work, the Museum of Art will hold an exhibition in March to showcase the latest donation along with its existing collection of Wu's works.

Special stamp issue - Hong Kong, China - Brazil Joint Issue on Football

Hongkong Post October 20 announced that a set of stamps based on the theme of "Hong Kong, China - Brazil Joint Issue on Football" will be released for sale together with associated philatelic products on November 5 (Thursday).

Official first day covers priced at $1 each will be put on sale at all post offices starting from October 22, while stamps and associated philatelic products will go on display at the General Post Office, Tsim Sha Tsui Post Office, Tsuen Wan Post Office and Sha Tin Central Post Office from the same day.  Advance orders for servicing self-provided covers will be accepted at all philatelic offices from October 22 to 29.

Museum of Art showcases Ha Bik Chuen's works

An exhibition in memory of the late local artist Mr Ha Bik Chuen, who passed away on October 18, will be held at the Hong Kong Museum of Art from November 7 to January 24, 2010.

Ha Bik-chuen (1925-2009) was born in San Wui District of Guangdong, China. He moved to Macau in 1949 and settled in Hong Kong in 1957. He began practising the art of sculpture in 1960. He excelled in making sculptures, prints, ink art and mixed media works. He was the Founding President of the Hong Kong Sculpture Society, a member of the Hong Kong Visual Arts Society, Hong Kong Sculptors Association and Hong Kong Graphics Society. His works were presented in the "Contemporary Hong Kong Art Exhibitions" and "Contemporary Hong Kong Art Biennial Exhibitions" at the Museum of Art from the 60s to the 80s and in the "Art Now Hong Kong Exhibition" which toured London, Manchester, Bristol and Edinburgh in 1971. His prints were exhibited in Hong Kong, USA, Poland, Norway and Yugoslavia, including the "5th International Miniature Print Exhibition" of 1975 at the Pratt Graphics Centre, US. Ha received many awards including the Award for Arts Achievement (Visual Arts) by Hong Kong Arts Development Council in 2003 and the Outstanding Award in the 10th National Exhibition of Fine Arts, China in 2004.

Chinese Film Panorama 2009 opens with "Tian An Men" to celebrate 60th Anniversary of PRC

The "Chinese Film Panorama 2009 - Celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China" opened October 5 at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, with the spectacular film "Tian An Men".

The event is jointly presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and South China Film Industry Workers Union, in association with Sil-Metropole Organisation Ltd and Southern Film Co Ltd.
