Exhibition reviews Lydia Sum's memorable showbiz career

Photos, personal belongings and stage costumes of the late actress Lydia Sum, as well as footage of her films, TV dramas and interviews, will be on show at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum from July 22 until February 22, 2010, to review Sum's memorable show business career and explore the cultural meanings of her iconic screen image.

The exhibition, Our Beloved "Happy Fruit" Lydia Sum, reviews Sum's eight iconic screen images - "Happy Fruit", "Fei Fei (Fatty)", "Shanghai Woman", "Shi-nai" (Family Woman), "Strong Woman", "Champion Mistress of Ceremonies", "Dear Friend" and "Charity" - to pay tribute to her outstanding career and explore the relationships of the icons with the broader historical and cultural context of Hong Kong.

Creative ideas invited to restore Bruce Lee's residence

The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mrs Rita Lau, July 20 invited members of the public and professionals in related fields to submit ideas and concepts for restoring the former residence of the late Mr Bruce Lee in Kowloon Tong. The aim is to turn the residence into an attraction for locals and tourists to commemorate Mr Lee's contribution to martial arts and the film industry.

In a joint press conference announcing the launch of the Ideas Competition for Bruce Lee's Residence, property owner Mr Yu Pang-lin said he hoped that the whole community would actively participate so that the best ideas could be selected to restore the residence to its original appearance and to optimise the use of space for the provision of facilities such as an exhibition hall, audio-visual room, kung-fu corner, library and souvenir counter.

Housing heritage visualised in old estates exhibition

An exhibition of photographs and documentary videos of three public housing estates - Shek Kip Mei, So Uk and Lower Ngau Tau Kok - will be open to members of the public from July 12.

The photo and video exhibition will make its debut from July 12 to 25 at the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre in Shek Kip Mei. The exhibits will then move to the Park Court of Pacific Place from July 26 to 30, Sha Tin Town Hall from August 11 to 16 and Tuen Mun Town Hall from August 23-30.

More District Cyber Centres in pipeline

A total of 14 district-based cyber centres were providing services under a pilot scheme on District Cyber Centres (DCCs) and it would be expanded to 25 to cover different districts, the Permanent Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development (Communications and Technology), Mr Duncan Pescod, said July 16.

The scheme is currently supporting 14 centres equipped with about 200 computers and related facilities, as well as training programmes to serve different needy communities including youth, the elderly and women. A library is established to provide about 190 laptop computers for loan to the public and a mobile van will parade across the territory to deliver training and mount community-based ICT thematic activities.

Hong Kong team wins 18 medals in 1st Asian Youth Games

The Hong Kong delegation achieved encouraging results in the just concluded 1st Asian Youth Games (AYG) by winning a total of 18 medals, comprising five gold, eight silver and five bronze.

The Deputy Director of Leisure and Cultural Services (Leisure Services), Mr Bobby Cheng, and the Assistant Director of Leisure and Cultural Services (Leisure Services), Miss Olivia Chan, welcomed the athletes home upon their arrival at the Hong Kong International Airport from Singapore July 7.

HK Film Archive showcases legend and beauty of superstar Lin Dai

Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA)’s new retrospective “The Legend & The Beauty - The Films of Lin Dai” will be held from August 14 to November 1 with an exhibition of artifacts and screenings of Lin’s classics, featuring her in different roles. The programme is organised with the generous support of Lin’s son, Lung Tzong-hann, Shaw Brothers (Hong Kong) Limited, Cathay-Keris Films Pte Ltd, Celestial Pictures Limited and the Hong Kong Heritage Museum.

The 18 films showcasing Lin’s brilliant performances are her portrayals of different historical beauties in “The Kingdom and the Beauty”, “Beyond the Great Wall”, “Diau Charn”, “The Last Woman of Shang” and “Madam White Snake”; her early works “The Fisherman’s Daughter”, “Golden Phoenix” and “Golden Lotus” which won her the first Best Actress Award; city comedies “The Battle of Love”, “Cinderella and Her Little Angels”, “Les Belles”, “Love Parade” and “Bachelors Beware”; city dramas “A Mellow Spring” and “Humiliation for Sale” and the popular romantic melodramas “Love without End”, “The Blue and the Black” and “The Blue and the Black 2”.

Environmental levy on plastic shopping bags to start from July 7

The Secretary for the Environment, Mr Edward Yau, officiated July 5 at the pre-commencement ceremony of the Environmental Levy Scheme on Plastic Shopping Bags organised by the Environmental Protection Department at East Point City, Tseung Kwan O.

Under the scheme, registered retailers are required to charge customers a 50-cent environmental levy for providing a plastic shopping bag with handle. Prescribed retailers include major and chain supermarkets, convenience stores, personal health and beauty stores, and supermarkets inside department stores.

New 3+1 Service Arrangement on Tseung Kwan O Line

A special Early Bird Offer is being launched for residents living near Po Lam and Hang Hau stations beginning on 20 July to tie in with the implementation of the new 3+1 train service arrangement during peak periods on the Tseung Kwan O Line. Passengers entering ticket gates at either station before 8:00am from Monday to Friday will receive one point on their Octopus cards for each journey. For every five points accumulated in each given week, passengers can use the points to redeem a HK$10 MTR Shops cash coupon. The Early Bird Offer will be available for four consecutive weeks, concluding on 14 August. Cash coupons must be redeemed by the Sunday of each week of the promotion.
